Historically a place of exile for Byzantine royalty and statesmen, Buyukada hosted the likes of Empress Irene in the Kadınlar Monastery.
Spanning 5.4 km², the island’s nearest point to the Maltepe shore is just 2.3 km.
Among the oldest structures was a convent used as a prison for those who posed a threat to the empire’s ruling powers. Though it hasn’t survived to the present day, it remains a focal point of Buyukada’s colorful history.
